Windsurfing: Golf Course Car park, Ynyslas Wind Direction: W Wind Stength: 45-20 knots Surf / Sea State: Rough! Air Temperature: 6ºC Sea Temperature: 9ºC Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 33.4 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 37.9 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Perfection....Woooohoooo.
When I first got to the neach the wind was arounf 36-40 knots, didn't drop
below 35, but did gust up to 45 at times. I thought about rigging my 3.4m
but as the wind was forecast to drop went with the 4.5 instead. Needless to
say when I first got on the water I was completely overpowered most of the
time and just hanging on for my life. Couldn't really go for anythgin or
even bear away properly as it was proper survival conditions. After about
half an hour of this I did a jump off a little wave and as I did my UJ
snapped leaving me in mid air with a separate board and rig!!... Kinda
scary!
I went back in, changed UJ's and soon got back out there. The wind had
eased off by now to around 30-35 knots and I had a couple of hours of pure
perfection, lots of nice floaty jumps and some mad speed runs in between
the waves. It wasn't ideal conditions for out and out speed, but with my
new GPS toy I was going for it as best I could. Despite my highly rockered
wave board, wave sail, the most chipped fin you've ever seen and the rough
conditions I managed loads of runs over 30 knots and my fastest was 33.4
knots.. Not bad I don't think and it certainly felt fast. It must have
looked fast as well as I came off the water at one point as Will was
setting up his kite and his first comment was on how fast I was going!..
Larry said the same a little later too. So, unless we get some perfect flat
water speed sailing and I use a faster board I can see that 33.4 knots is
going to take some beating for me.
I got back on the water as Will went out with his 6m kite, but the wibnd
had eased off a bit by now so the speeds dropped off but it was still good
blasting up and down in amongst the whitewater, still clocked up 30.5 knots
even with the wind easing a bit.
Chris then turned up and pumped his kite up, but by the time he got on the
water, the wind had eased off loads and I was having trouble getting going
with my 4.5m sail. I came in and measured the wind and sure enough it was
now only around 20 knots. I couldn't be bothered to rig any bigger kit as I
had already had almost 4 hours on the water anyway... What a day.
